Choosing your destination
The choice of destination depends on your expectations. You need to determine your personal and academic objectives. The Erasmus programme can be started with the aim of improving your language skills. It can also be used to discover a new culture or deepen your knowledge in a specific field.
You need to identify the partner universities and their study programmes. It is important to select an institution that offers relevant courses.
You should also take into account the cost of living in each country. This will enable you to establish your budget and set up a financing plan.
Learning the language of the host country
To guarantee an enriching experience, you need to understand the local language. It is possible to take courses. Universities generally offer special courses for foreign students. These programmes are tailored to your level of language proficiency.
Mobile applications also help you master vocabulary. Familiarising yourself with the country’s culture and customs will also enrich your knowledge. This encourages exchanges with the locals and an understanding of their way of life.
Integrating into your new environment
The success of your stay is influenced by your integration. It is therefore advisable to take part in events organised by the university and student associations. You should get involved in student life and attend the activities on offer. This experience encourages you to meet local students and other Erasmus students.
It’s important to take the time to explore your new surroundings. You can go for walks to discover the city and its surroundings. Host countries are often rich in cultural sites, monuments and museums. You can try the local cuisine to familiarise yourself with the culture.
Financing your Erasmus
Obtaining grants
There are several types of grants available to help finance your stay abroad:
- Erasmus+ grant: this is intended for students taking part in a university exchange in European countries. This financial aid helps to cover part of your travel and accommodation costs. The amount can range from £150 to £450 per month. It varies depending on the country, standard of living and social criteria;
- National and regional grants: to promote mobility, the regions offer subsidies or grants. These may be government bodies, educational institutions or private organisations. Eligibility conditions are specific to each institution;
- scholarships from companies and foundations: these encourage students to gain international experience or pursue studies in specific fields. For companies, this is a way of forging links with institutions and attracting talent. For the recipients, it represents an opportunity to obtain significant financial aid.
Managing your budget
To avoid misadventures in a foreign country, you need to plan your expenses and draw up a realistic budget. This involves determining the costs of accommodation, food, transport and other needs. This will give you a clear picture of your situation.
You can put in place solutions to reduce your costs. For example, it’s possible to live in a shared house to share expenses. You can opt for home cooking instead of eating out.
Many students consider working part-time to supplement their income. There are many job opportunities that offer a degree of flexibility in terms of working hours. This helps to consolidate your CV with international work experience.
